Liberia, land of the free was founded by free African-American from the United states in 1820. The initial group of 86 immigrants,
who came to be called Americo-Liberian, established a settlement in
Christopolis now Monrovia. The capital was named after the U.S. President James Monroe on February 6, 1820.There are 16 different ethnic groups that make up the Liberia's indigenous population. Kpelle, the largest ethic group, is located in the central and western Liberia. Americo Liberian, who are the freed slave descendents, arrived in Liberia after 1820 make up less than 5% of the population.
